South Chesterman Condos still doing nightly rentals.... https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/45076449?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=b77448ab-fe58-4cdb-9d83-d3352af8f91e
All illegal rentals in Tofino will continue as usual. We basically have no bylaw and with it being complaint based, its all a moot point to even have any bylaws . Tofino has good VR bylaws in place but they fail to enforce them and always have. They created a DOT staff position when they raised VR BL years ago, and still nothing has changed. We can all point out the illegal VR's but unfortunately no one enforces them just us poor sops that have to complain with no action or response . The commodification of home's ownership is a big issue. In a small town like Tofino its even a bigger issue due to limitations of land available to build and the desire for second home owners to buy up the town to VR homes ( non local and local). I don't see any changes ever happening as this conversation has been going on for over 15 years and not one council has done anything but lip service. Its cooler to beautify the downtown than deal with real issues, like sewer, water and infrastructure needs. Tofino is a theme park not a town or community , that boat sailed when they signed on to be a resort municipality many years ago!
Agreed that policing is lacking, which is why it would be hard to implement a higher fee for non-local VRs. Who would enforce? But it's a good idea and the cost should be much higher than in Canmore.
Lie a halibut in the woods. We are done. Councils keep the bureaucracy going. Keep themselves in power. so they can do nothing but admire their reflections, and cede the community to others.
Last time I looked Canmore is in AB and not BC. There are different Provincial regulations! Petition the Province, the Municipality has its hands tied.
