Recently acquired documents from a Freedom Of Information request show that not only is the District of Tofino dumping raw sewage from Tofino and Esowista but that they failed to even monitor the sewer system for a large portion of July and August.Provincial law requires that the sewer flow be recorded daily.Again,in an election year our council is strangely silent on this issue.

Lamp Pole Revitalization

Many avid blog readers asked me to post pics of the lamp poles in the Lone Cone and Pfeiffer areas in Tofino. One reader wondered how council could spend millions on Downtown Revitalization but these lamp posts are left to rust.Let's hope that the Superintendent of Public Works gets a maintenance schedule in place soon.Whether it is the firehall or road signs or these lamp posts they are all assets belonging to the District of Tofino and should be maintained.It is strange that council ignores these issues in an election year.

Sign Story From Vancouver

It seems that the Superintendent of Public Works in Vancouver has staff working on something other than basic maintenance as well.A call to Vancouver city hall confirmed that the City of Vancouver does not operate its own sawmill.

Fighting Tofino Council's Green Agenda

A comment on the blog suggested all they could expect from it was talk.I took this to heart and decided to clean a couple of signs.Using organic apple vinegar and a scrub brush made from hemp with a value added wood product handle I set about the task.Travel time included it took less than five minutes with a materials cost of about 15 cents. A passerby suggested that the growth on the signs was part of Council's green agenda........

		13.1	Pacific Rim Visitor Centre Notice of motion from the Mayor: WHEREAS the Pacific Rim Visitor’s Centre is a regional visitors centre that benefits all the communities of the West Coast, and  WHEREAS the desire has been expressed to improve operation of the centre and representation of local businesses, organizations and communities in the centre;  THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Tofino Council support the on-going discussions between the District of Tofino and the District of Ucluelet, their respective Chambers of Commerce and Destination Marketing Organizations, Parks Canada and the region’s First Nations for an improved approach to operations at the Pacific Rim Visitors Centre, and THAT the Tofino Council encourage the negotiation of a new operational agreement between relevant parties to begin no later than January 1, 2015.
		13.2	Rural Veterinary Services Notice of motion from the Mayor: THAT Tofino Council send a letter to the College of Veterinarians of BC expressing the need for basic and emergency veterinary services on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and urging the college to develop bylaws or otherwise create the necessary conditions that would permit qualified people to undertake basic procedures that improve animal welfare in rural communities (e.g., neutering) and that reduce unnecessary pain and suffering (e.g., euthanasia or stabilization of injured animal for transport).
