Who needs zoning or a business license ?

https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/842675

from the ad: "What makes The Shore unit unique is that it was not built as a rental unit. It was and still is used as a second home to the owners. Therefore guests can expect to stay in a well maintained and cared for home with top of the line accessories to complete your stay."

Fantastic! It's beautiful! Do I call the District Office to book a short stay?

just a question about another business, looks like the new rainforest lodge(formerly orca lodge) removed the vegetation from the 15 meter covenant area along the highwy. said covenant, in favor of the district of tofino, prohibits the removal of vegetation. what happens next? pass go - get out of jail free - it was all a big mistake. sorry, oops, i didnt know

Tofino's OCP supports the use of tourism (and its support activities)along the waterfront in downtown Tofino with a number of other mixed uses as well....Why not just permit the use of short term rentals at the Shore and at least start collecting some business license revenues from the absentee owners that can be put to good use within Tofino. The Shore condo's will never be the answer to Tofino's affordable housing or turn into monthly rental units...

the reason i disagree with giving the shore the privlidge of changing by laws specifically for them is that there are other developers in town that had to jump through many hoops and red tape that cost money and time., They had to alter their designs to make them fit into the guidlines and bylaws. And even then had to wait longer for their occupancy permits that cost more money and time.
Furthermore, I think that the Shore is a fast tracked and backwards thinking development that does not kickstart a revitalization of main street. It is a blatant gamble by some albertan developer (sic) that was ill timed with the real estate bubble bursting. Other law abiding citizens may not be paying for it outright but when we see the double standards of the law, we pay for it existentially.

By similar reasoning why not just give poole's land their camping spot license and legitimize what is already going on there? the city would make money off it?

If we are to change the laws for this development, there should be an incentive put forth by the shore. I suggest them allowing the use of their 'restaurant' space to be used as a public market similar to what granville island has. THis would be beneficial in that it could be done on any given day of the week (not just saturdays) and create a great space for tourists and locals alike on those rainy days. It would inherently increase the proffesionalism of the vendors as they would have to invest a bit more money. But the barriers of entry for entrepeneurs would be much smaller as you wouldn't need your own individual store front for whatever endeavour one has condurred. This seems like a interesting solution for increasing the diversity of the economy here and make it more accessible for people with less capital.

Didn't we have a B&B here last week trying to get a business license and then get the shaft from the staff at DOT?

What happened to the Orca, it looks like a parking lot?

1:56 - there you go with crazy talk and positive solutions - can't you just complain?!?!?

Shore sucks, blocks view to water for the visitors and Tofitians, takes up too much room for the little amount of people it houses. It's a big ugly jail looking cement block dropped right into the heat of Main Street ! Yuck !

6:01 are you nuts? bc packers bldg was a mess and and eyesore.
the OCP plan to make it into a ferry terminal and an open market got forgotten.
ocean outfitters is sort of like a ferry - the shore restaurant will be sort of like a market but kind of expensive maybe.

The Shore would be an excellent terminal for BC Ferries while they provide a efficient affordable frieght and passenger service to the the west coast. It would also be a fantastic venue for Superstores new 'fresh local' market concept that is due to be introduced in North America. All the travellers can just get off the cruiseship style ferries and buy farmed smoked salmon(produced in China), cured herring roe(produced in Thailand) and Joe ceader bark clothes(made in Bangladesh). That sound your now hear is cash pouring in like a west coast rainfall in April.
