   COLUMBIA/ WASHINGTON/ OREGON AND CALIFORNIA ONLY...

NO WARNING... NO WATCH AND NO ADVISORY IS IN EFFECT FOR
THESE AREAS.

EARTHQUAKES OF THIS SIZE ARE KNOWN TO GENERATE TSUNAMIS 
POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS TO COASTS OUTSIDE THE SOURCE REGION.
THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER IS INVESTIGATING
THE EVENT TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF DANGER. MORE INFORMATION
WILL BE ISSUED AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE.

AT 548 AM PACIFIC DAYLIGHT TIME ON AUGUST 31 AN EARTHQUAKE WITH
PRELIMINARY MAGNITUDE 7.9 OCCURRED 
IN THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS REGION.

Airport Road Closure

Notice of Road Closure Long Beach Airport (CYAZ)
The Long Beach Airport Road will be closed for a culvert replacement from September 4 to 15, 2012. Airport access will be limited to Apron 1 at the Long Beach Golf Course. Access to the Terminal building
will not be available for the duration of construction. Parking will be limited at the Long Beach Golf Course. Emergency access can be arranged by contacting the Airport Supervisor at (250) 726‐5336.

Service for Jamie Collins

James William (Jamie) Collins passed accidentally on Aug. 17, 2012.
Beloved son of Ann and Bob Collins, inspirational brother to Don (Steph) and Laura (Ivan) Olsen, and best friend to Isla Thomas. Jamie is also mourned by his Grandmother Bernice Collins, many aunts, uncles, cousins, a large extended family, his constant canine companion Paxton and a legion of cherished friends. Jamie was born on June 1, 1979 and was raised on the family farm in the Alberni Valley. He attended Sproat Elementary, A.W. Neill Secondary and ADSS. He was a long-time member of the Alberni Valley 4-H Calf Club and was a gifted school athlete. His passion and talent for skateboarding coupled with his kind, caring nature, irrepressible sense of humour, and enormous heart has made him a legend in the BC skating community. He has been a third generation carpenter in Tofino since 2003.

An outdoor celebration of life will take place at Collins Farm / Arrowvale Campground, 5955 Hector Rd., Port Alberni on Sunday August 26 from 1:00 until 3:00 pm. No flowers please. Those who wish may donate to a memorial fund in support of kid's sports: Jamie Collins Legend and Legacy Fund. Acct. # (see new #) at any Bank of Montreal branch.

Filming Permit

The District of Tofino is in the process of issuing a filming permit for the evening of August 24 and possibly 25 between the hours of roughly 6pm – 8pm.  The shoot involves a helicopter filming 3 canoes in the South Chesterman area.  Every effort will be made to keep any disturbance to a minimum.

Mayor Update

Mayor Perry Schmunk has confirmed via Twitter that he is not leaving Tofino but he is joining the Cactus Club Restaurant team. Congrats on the new position !

Water Numbers from the District

The below numbers indicate that Tofino is using relatively little water for this time of year.Thanks to the District for posting these numbers on their website.                                                                                                     DAILY WATER CONSUMPTION
The table below lists the number of gallons of water consumed on a daily basis which is provided through the Bay Street pump house and the water treatment plant. Figures are updated on a daily basis.

Ucluelet Building Inspector Story from Westerly

 Ucluelet acted quickly to make staffing changes.Although there have been lawsuits and other problems in Tofino there seems to be no appetite for change.

water update and other news

Several anonymous reports from reliable sources indicate that we are in good shape with the water system.Will try to keep posting updates.One wonders why this can't be done by the District of Tofino.
  In other news there have been downriggers stolen from boats moored in Tofino.Many reports of sockeye being harvested in Cannery Bay.

Water System Questions

Many long time locals have contacted TofinoNews to see if there has been anything announced regarding the water situation.We have had a relatively dry summer and yet the District of Tofino has not said anything about the water situation.At least Bob Long and John Fraser made public the daily water consumption amounts but we've heard nothing from this administration. If there is an abundance of water they should let the public know.
  Why not publish the daily water consumption numbers on the District website ? It has been done in previous years and it lets people know if they should conserve or prepare for water restrictions.

  The above forecast shows only 1 mm of precipitation in the outlook period.Perhaps there is enough ground water  on Meares Island to keep us going for the foreseeable future.This is the first real dry period we have seen with the Ahkmaksis Reservoir and Sharp Rd. water treatment plant being used so it should be monitored closely.During last year's election all of the candidates spoke about transparency so let's have some actual daily numbers provided by the District so that the citizens of Tofino and guests know what is happening.

Wickaninnish Inn Pro-Am Golf Tournament Sponsorship Request.  (Report from Accounting Supervisor)
THAT Council considers the sponsorship request from Long Beach Golf Course and if the request is granted that the funds be allocated from the 2012 contingency.

c)
Vancouver Foundation Grant Application for the Ambassador Program. (Report from the Deputy Clerk)
THAT Council endorse the grant application funding request to the Vancouver Foundation for the Ambassador Program in the amount of $12,000 by Tofino-Long Beach Chamber of Commerce.

THAT Council approve the Queen of the Peak event, scheduled for October 13 & 14, 2012, subject to the conditions of the permit being met.

a)
Downtown Vitalization Implementation Committee minutes from July 26, 2012 for Council endorsement.
  1. THAT the District consider purchasing 10 double garbage bins with recycling baskets to replace older bins throughout the downtown core.
  2. THAT Council direct staff to include bike racks in the Fourth and Campbell Intersection Project.
  3. THAT Council consider the installation of a washroom at the First Street dock that would not include changerooms or a washroom.
  4. THAT any interpretative signage at this location be historical in nature and be included as part of the Tofino heritage walking tour; AND THAT all signage be referred to the Heritage Committee for approval prior to installation.
  5. THAT Council consider the four cross walk designs for the Fourth and Campbell Intersection project and provide direction to staff on which design or designs to proceed with.

b)
OCP Implementation Committee minutes from August 8, 2012 for Council endorsement.
  1. Hire Juliet Van Vliet as staff (Temporary Assistant Planner) for a nine month term beginning on September 4th, 2012 to plan, organize and implement the OCP update.
  2. Terms of Reference Change-Under MEMBERSHIP the following changes are recommended:
    i) From: OCPIMC is comprised of seven members of the public.
    To: OCPIMC is comprised of up to eleven members of the public.
    ii) From: A quorum shall consist of a minimum of four members required for decision making.
    To: For decision making purposes, a quorum shall consist of a minimum of 51% of the committee.
    iii) Addition: If a member misses 3 meetings in a row without corresponding with the committee and supporting staff, the committee has the opportunity to request Council to remove the individual from the committee.
  3. Motion to extend Roland and Peter’s term on the committee for another year.
